The UBC Cob Building project was initiated by students in 2003 to provide a demonstration
sustainable construction project for the education and enjoyment of visitors and volunteers.
Cob is an old form of natural building that was prevalent in 15th Century England. It involves
creating monolithic walls out of a mixture of sand, clay and straw. The materials are mixed
together by foot and applied to the wall by hand. With a proper foundation and roof, a cob
building can withstand the rainiest of Vancouver weather.
