First Gold Medal

Previous Home

Untitled-0

On Sunday, Day 3, Alexandre Bilodeau won Canada's first ever Gold Medal on home soil. He's a freestyle skier,
a spectacular performance, over the top. The very next morning both Canada Post and the
Royal Canadian Mint came out with stamps and a medallion to celebrate the event. I went down
to the Post Office and bought what's called a souvenir sheet, a special printing of the stamps
wrapped in a decorative background. Then I went down to Paper Ya,
a specialty handmade paper shop on Granville Island for an appropriate envelope,
then to the Post Office again to apply a special cancel specific for freestyle skiing.
This $5 bit of stuff has now become worth about $100, but I'm not selling.
